ABOUT US

The Waterside area is a stretch of land sandwiched between the New Forest in the West and Southampton Water in the East.

The club opened in 1992 on a Wednesday evening at Hardley School, Holbury and was (and still is run) by Master Colin Graves. The Waterside Taekwondo Club is a full member of British Taekwondo and throughout its history has won many awards (best Club at Chung Do Kwan Southern Championships, 1997, 1998 & 1999). In 2019 we were the main feature on BBC South Today sport after gaining 5 national sparring champions at the Velodrome in Manchester.

In 2019, the club opened a full time venue called 'The Dojang' at the Hardley Industrial Estate where we run classes 6 days a week. We continue to run other classes in the region as it's proven to be popular in the area of Southampton.

BBC South Today

Waterside Taekwondo Club were proudly featured on the television after achieving our best results at the sparring nationals held in Manchester in 2019. Master Colin Graves and Natasha Staddon stood bravely in front of the cameras as our sparring team were lead by Master Sean Neill.

The Concept

We offer a full range of classes for every member of the family.
We aim to focus on fitness and we know that every person is different and that's why we ask you to go at a pace that suits you.
We notice that students that attend our classes gain in confidence as they interact with others.
You have the opportunity to use our classes as a way of learning every aspect of Taekwondo for either pure enjoyment, fitness, self defence or you might even prefer progress towards a black belt.
Those that like to grade have the opportunity to attend one every three months in front of our panel of examiners.

The Achievements

Our club is not just about training and progressing towards a black belt.
We run several classes that allow you to take Taekwondo to another level.
We run test matches so you can compete against other clubs in the region or you might want to take part in one of the many events that we attend around the country.
You can do full contact sparring or even go head to head with someone with your patterns that you learn for your gradings.
Our club travel together as a group and the friendship amongst us all is warming and enjoyable.
Come along and join us as we fly the Team Waterside flag around the UK and in Europe.

The Atmosphere

All of our classes in, Millbrook, Totton, Thornhill, Sholing and Holbury have a great family atmosphere.
From my experience of training not many clubs allow Children and Adults to train together and to us this is not right.
We love the fact you can practice your skills at home plus help each other progress further.
When we started focussing on family Taekwondo we have seen the club grow inside the training venue and outside.
Families often socialise together and often chat on our private Facebook and WhatsApp page.
You will feel very welcome here especially from our great team of Instructors and the parents that get involved at the club.

The Energy

Our team of Instructors has a passion about Taekwondo and the energy flows very well during the classes.
You will often have classes where kicks will go flying through the air, spinning kicks on the kick targets plus the sparring classes you will see students attacking and counter attacking with the best moves in Taekwondo.
Come along and be part of the energy that Waterside Taekwondo Club produces.

Will I be fit enough to start?

‘Yes, but it is our job to get you fitter’ as our team of Instructors will ask you to train at a pace that suits you.

Will I be able to afford it?

You have many options as you can either join our monthly plan or just do PAYG when you train.
Our PAYG classes work out as £6.50 or £6.00 for our Tae-FIT session or the monthly fee can work out as cheap as £4.00 per person.

Will I get a family discount?

Most certainly as we offer the third person free.
If you have a fourth member then it's half price.
We even do a special rate for a family of 5 as we appreciate the high costs.

Sparring or Traditional?

That is often asked.
If you prefer the sparring side of things where you make contact with others wearing all the equipment, then this is a good choice.
If you want to learn self-defence or patterns - we call them 'poomsae' then this is your best option.
However, many of our students choose to do both.

Do I have to do gradings?

Not at all as you can just focus on the fitness side of Taekwondo and enjoy the drills and pad work.
You don't even have to 'buy the uniforms (or doboks as we call them).'
Many students often buy the club t-shirt, which costs £20 and this would have your personal name on.

Can I become a black belt?

Most certainly as we have a grading every three months.
You can either do the traditional grading or sports sparring.
Our team of examiners will put you through a test where you will have the opportunity to get your next grade.

Team Waterside Sports Sparring Coaches

“Our sparring sessions are for those interested in doing competitions and the sports sparring grading. Our sessions are full contact but we bring you along slowly to make sure you learn how to defend and move while fighting an opponent. We are proudly producing great results and this is down to the hard work the fighters are putting in each training session and the hard work the coaches are putting in to match them.”
Master Colin Graves, Head Sparring Coach
“We are delighted with the progress of our fighters and the dedication they are putting in training. Our days away taking on the best clubs in the country is an experience for everyone but also a great day out. We have such great friendship in the club as we support each other from the start to the finish.”
Sean Neill, Head Sparring Coach
